BUSTER Family Reading ProgramCCS is proud that the BUSTER Family Reading Program is a part of our PK 3 and PK 4 curriculum. This program was written by Kristen Galuppi Sisk, a CCS alumna who has her Masters degree in reading. Sisk developed the program while teaching in the Dallas Public School System.
The BUSTER program is a joint effort between teachers and parents that enhances the early reading skills of preschool children. Children need time to read and then interact with an adult about what they have read. This conversation helps children to become excited and motivated readers. The BUSTER program provides activities to help parents have meaningful discussions about books while also building higher levels of reading comprehension concepts and skills.
The activities are designed to be completed with any fiction or informational books families may have at home. You can also check books out from the library. Because children learn from repetition, activities can can be repeated with the same or different books. The teachers will be working on these activities with the students as well, so the teachers will be familiar with what is being repeated at home. The children will then have an opportunity to "teach" the parents. The activity sheets come with suggestions for implementation; however, the activities are just the start of a fun and enriching learning experience between children and parents.
At CCS, we believe that all children develop at their own individual pace; therefore, students will receive different activities based on their interest and ability. Depending on what your child is comfortable with, they can write, draw or tell you their answers. Some activities are discussion only. The worksheets will come home weekly, and families can choose when to complete the activity sheets. Students will receive a sticker for participation. We encourage everyone to take some time together to complete the activities and enjoy some time together reading, learning and growing.
